LERA’s SawTeen See Wins Built by Women Award
Leslie E. Robertson Associates’s SawTeen See has been honored by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation for her role as lead structural engineer on the Bellevue Hospital Renovation and Expansion. This project has been awarded a Built by Women award and is part of a year long program celebrating women’s contributions to the built environment in New York.
Bellevue Hospital Renovation and Expansion
It was thought that it would be impossible or too costly to add the new atrium and skylight to the original McKim, Mead and White building which was built in the 1930’s.
With minor enhancement to the existing columns, and with new engineering studies, the original building is able to support the vertical loads of the skylight and atrium. With an innovative detail at the supports, all the earthquake loads are carried back to the new building.
Members of LERA attended the awards kick-off party at the Fulton Center in February. Bellevue and the other award-winning projects are featured in an exhibit at The Center for Architecture through April 11.
