Class of 1986 Fitness & Wellness Center

LERA was the structural engineer for a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the former Dillon Gymnasium at Princeton University, now known as the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center. The project included the demolition of existing modular structures located on the Dillon Court area, and the construction of a 2-story addition on the southeast corner of the building; a major renovation of the south portion of the A level, as well as the Stephens Fitness Center in the southwest wing of the building; and the replacement of a heavily corroded exterior stair.

The renovation created a new accessible entrance and lobby on the north side of the south wing, and increased accessibility in most of the building with the inclusion of a new elevator on the south side that serves all levels of the building. The existing paved parking lot near the tower was repaved and landscaped to create a new pedestrian entrance plaza.

Seeking LEED Gold certification, the project also includes natural ventilation, mass timber construction and a green roof at the addition. In keeping with Princeton’s Sustainability Action Plan, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water usage, enhance stormwater management in the area and cultivate healthy and resilient habits.
