Brooklyn Bridge Park | Public Boathouse +

Maintenance Facility

LERA was the structural engineer for a new public boathouse and a new maintenance and operations building located at Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, totaling 17,000 sf. The galvanized-steel framed boathouse facility provides secure, open-air boat storage at grade level, with a multipurpose room and public restrooms on the upper floor, safely above flood waters. The maintenance and operations building provides staff office and storage space and an outdoor work yard.

Located in close proximity to a subway tunnel and on a site with challenging soil conditions, the boathouse is supported by approximately 45 piers that extend as far as 40 ft into the ground.

Quoted in Architectural Record, Stephen Cassell, Principal at Architecture Research Office, stated, “There’s a lot more structure under this than one would imagine for a tiny little building.”
