Publix by the Bay Miami, FL
Located on a constrained site in South Beach, this 150,000-sf (13,900-sm) flagship supermarket is no ordinary food store. The project includes two levels of cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete parking deck above the store. The 200-ft (61-m) long storefront is a 50-ft (15-m.) tall tilted metal and glass screenwall with a frame of small diameter leaning steel columns. The top of the wall supports a sloped and curving cantilever metal roof, which measures 300 ft (91 m) by 200 ft (61 m). Publix by the Bay is three times as large as the typical Publix store. Its unique geometry presented several structural challenges. The most complex challenge was the design of the sloped and curving metal and glass screen wall. The wall is structured to withstand hurricane winds using 6-inch diameter pipe columns that are tilted along the plane of the wall. The top of the wall supports the sloped and curving cantilever metal roof with specially designed stiffeners. In addition to being supported only at the top, the wall is curved and cantilevers from an elevator shaft, in two directions, for up to 60 ft (18 m). |
