Our Philosophy

Leslie E. Robertson Associates, R.L.L.P.
a community dedicated to professional engineering

Founded in 1923, we are an engineering organization operating on a national and an international scale. While making every effort to provide to our clients a service of uniform and high quality, our focus is on the practice of structural engineering wherein we provide an imaginative and a responsible approach to engineering problems. In doing so, we seek reasonable security, compensation and full professional growth and satisfaction for all within the firm.

We are committed to the following professional and human policies and standards:

Professional

• We are organized to provide a professional service to architects, owners/builders, and contractors, but stand prepared to undertake prime contracts where not in competition with our architectural clients.

• Responsiveness to the needs of our clients and to owner/builders is a primary goal in all of our endeavors. We understand also that contractors and subcontractors alike deserve from us a fair and a thoughtful response to their needs.

• We are dedicated to the concept of individual liberty inside of the framework of an overall professional ethic. While respecting the rights of others, it is anticipated that individuals within the firm will retain control of their own destiny. We carry this precept into our practice of engineering.

• The ever-changing needs of man demand and receive from us a professional practice, alert and adaptable to the complexities of our time.

• We endorse and demand adherence to the highest standards of ethical conduct as promulgated by the professional societies in our field.

Commissions

• Where it is appropriate for us to do so and where such commissions are particularly responsive to humanitarian needs or goals, we are prepared to and we do accept commissions at cost, without profit.

• We do not accept commissions which violate the following principles:
In developing solutions to our engineering challenges, we seek to provide both short- and long-term contributions to the sensible growth of the human environment.

We believe that it is inappropriate to use our skills and our knowledge in the development, maintenance, or use of biological, chemical, nuclear, or other weapons of mass destruction.

Quality of Work

• Perfection is neither possible nor expected, but we are committed to a policy of equaling or exceeding the normal and customary standards of the engineering community.

• Designs, intuitively correct, constructible, and economical are an essential part of our project development.

• Personnel, with adequate skills to develop plans and specifications reasonably free of errors and omissions, are the backbone of our quality assurance effort.

• Plans and specifications are complete and properly checked through a policy of adequately staffing all projects.

Personnel

• We understand that our past success has not been the result of individual effort, but rather is based on the broad input from the many dedicated men and women in the firm.

• We are committed to a policy of seeking and obtaining individuals of the highest caliber. We treat all employees and applicants for employment without discrimination as to race, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation or citizenship status in all employment decisions, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, compensation, training and apprenticeship, promotion, upgrading, demotion, downgrading, transfer, lay-off, and termination, and all other terms and conditions of employment.

• We endeavor to provide a lifetime career — one which demands the highest professional attainments from all within the firm.

• All persons in the firm, regardless of position, are encouraged to participate in a deliberate, realistic, and systematic evaluation of their own performance, expectations, and compensation.

• Promotion and compensation are based solely on the personal contribution and initiative of the individual and are not organized to minimize controversy or to reward longevity.

• Supported by our Tuition Refund Plan, the professional advancement of all persons within the firm is encouraged through a mandatory policy of continued education.

• In accordance with the provisions of our 401K profit sharing plan, half of the profits of the firm are distributed to our employees.

Management

• We are staffed and managed by engineers and related disciplines. All of our Partners, Associate Partners, and Associates are professional engineers, licensed to practice structural and/or civil engineering.

• LERA is a woman/minority owned firm (WBE/MBE), able to provide to its clients assurances that all groups from within our society are treated equally with regard to our professional and our business endeavors.

• Through a project-oriented operational mode, all persons are encouraged to contribute to management in areas of their own expertise. Indeed, non-engineers have risen to high levels of responsibility because of their special talents and energy.

• Project Managers are held accountable for project performance — professionally, technically, and monetarily — and are provided full access to our project records.

The concepts expressed here are not expressions of lofty goals to be achieved at some time in the future, but represent a continuing, evolving effort on our part to respond to the dynamic world in which we live.
